Vittorio Storaro was born in Rome on June 24,1940. At sixteen, he graduated as Master ofPhotography from the Istituto Tecnico Duca d'Aosta and served as an apprentice in aphotographic laboratory. In 1958, he received a diploma as a projectionist from the C.I.A.C.(Italian Cinematographic Training Center). Immediately afterwards, although he had not yetreached the minimum required age, the admissions panel of the prestigious Centro SperimentaleDi Cinematografia in Rome (Italian Film Institute) granted himspecial permission to take the entrance examination for theinstitute’s course in cinematography.The opportunity for which he had prepared and yearned, came in1968 when he was hired as cinematographer for Franco Rossi’sfilm Giovaneza, Giovanezza. This was the first film that gaveStoraro the possibility of fully expressing himself and allowedhim to begin developing the luminous style that has since come tocharacterize his cinematographic vision.Renowned directors like Bernardo Bertolucci, Luigi Bazzoni,Dario Argento, Giuseppe Patroni Griffi, Fabio Carpi, GiulianoMontaldo, Salvatore Samperi, Luca Ronconi, Francis Ford Coppola, Warren Beatty and CarlosSaura have provided him ample opportunities to collaborate.Each project helped to further hisresearch, experiment with images and deepen his understanding of the power of the image, whiledeveloping his unique cinematographic style.The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences in Los Angeles awarded him with threeAcademy Awards (Oscars) for the films: Apocalypse Now, directed by Francis Coppola; Reds,directed by Warren Beatty; and The Last Emperor, directed by Bernardo Bertolucci. Storaro hasalso received awards from various film academies such as: David di Donatello (Italy), BAFTA(Great Britain), Goya (Spain), Emmy (US) and the European Film Award.He taught the course"Writing with Light" at the Accademia Internazionale Delle Arti e Delle Scienze Dell’Immaginein L'Aquila, Italy from 1995 to 2004.Storaro continues to nurture his passion and creativity and remains actively involved inproductions. He is presently working on international film projects.
